Purpose of the role

To survey one or more of the 344 routes in the ScotWays publication Scottish Hill Tracks to help ScotWays verify if the current (5th edition) description for every Scottish Hill Track in Scotland is accurate. If the description needs amending, to suggest changes to the narrative for a new edition of the guide, due to be published in 2023. We would also like to increase our library of Hill Tracks photographs. Your role is to help survey recorded paths, and to note and report the findings to us.

The activities that you may be involved in include:

  • Visiting Scottish Hill Track routes across Scotland, many of which are in remote areas.
  • Carrying out a survey using a standard approach and template to report your findings, including any suggested new narrative for the route.
  • Recording details of any signposts or issues encountered on the Scottish Hill Track.
  • Reporting the results of your survey.

You will need:

  • A sense of adventure and enthusiasm for the outdoors
  • The desire to improve knowledge of Scottish Hill Tracks routes.
  • The fitness to walk your chosen route.
  • To have a good understanding of outdoor safety.
  • To be a competent navigator.
  • Clothing and footwear suitable being outdoors for long period of times.
  • A willingness to learn.
  • The ability to work alone in a safe and structured way.

  • The current description of the route from the 5th edition, an explanation of what information we need and a simple template to complete following your survey
